A.A. Sponsorship

What is an A.A. sponsor?

A sponsor is a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous that has worked the 12 Steps of A.A. and walks newcomers through the 12 Steps of A.A.

A.A.’s founding members realized that working with another alcoholic was the thing that was keeping them sober.

“My friend had emphasized the absolute necessity of demonstrating these principles in all my affairs. Particularly was it imperative to work with others as he had worked with me.” Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 14

“I was not too well at the time, and was plagued by waves of self-pity and resentment. This sometimes nearly drove me back to drink, but I soon found that when all other measures failed, work with another alcoholic would save the day.” Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 15

“I spend a great deal of time passing on what I learned to others who want and need it badly. I do it for four reasons:
1. Sense of duty.
2. It is a pleasure.
3. Because in so doing I am paying my debt to the man who took time to pass it on to me.
4. Because every time I do it I take out a little more insurance for myself against a possible slip.” Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 180-181
